What is the best travel eSIM in 2026?
Airalo is the safest all-round pick: the widest coverage at fair prices. Saily (by the NordVPN team) usually undercuts it slightly and adds security features, making it our best-value pick. For heavy users, Holafly’s unlimited plans are worth it on trips where you stream or hotspot a lot. For multi-country trips, regional plans from any of these beat stacking single-country packs.
Is a travel eSIM cheaper than roaming?
Almost always, and often dramatically. US carriers charge around $10 to $12 per day for international day passes; a 5 GB eSIM for Europe costs $15 to $20 once, for a month. For a two-week trip that is roughly $150 of day passes against under $20. The exception: very short trips of one or two days, where a day pass can be simpler.
Do I keep my own number and WhatsApp with an eSIM?
Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your existing number even when the data flows through a travel eSIM. Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts (turn data roaming off for it), and let the travel eSIM handle data. Most travel eSIMs are data-only, so calls go through WhatsApp, FaceTime, or similar apps.
Are unlimited eSIM plans really unlimited?
Usually not at full speed. Most "unlimited" travel plans apply a fair-use policy: full speed for the first 1 to 3 GB per day, then throttled to around 1 Mbps. That is fine for maps and messaging, painful for video. We list the throttle point per provider where it is published.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
Every iPhone since the XS/XR (2018) supports eSIM, and US iPhones from the 14 onward are eSIM-only, as are most iPhone 17 models worldwide. On Android, flagship Samsung Galaxy (S20 and later) and Google Pixel (3 and later) phones support it; many budget Android models still do not. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked.
